SHOPPERS should be encouraged to buy from small business for one day a week, according to a Labour MP, which could boost Hampton High Street.
Chuka Umunna, the shadow business secretary, said he wanted to copy the US tradition which sees celebrities and politicians celebrate small businesses.
A spokesperson from www.expertmarket.co.uk said: "There are many shops and small businesses in Hampton which could benefit from some closer attention and increased spending.
"Along with many other high streets across the country, consumers are drawn away from old independents towards generic stores and big name supermarkets, which is a great shame.
"Dazzling Dogs, The Rising Sun and Your Local Plumbing Company are three great examples of shops and pubs the high street would be poorer for being devoid of.
"If we don't embrace them, it is all to certain they will be transformed into Waitroses, Starbucks and Costas sooner, rather than later."If this scheme kicks off, there could be further life breathed into this historic high street.
Mr Umunna said: "We must do more to celebrate the contribution local, small independent businesses make to our economy and encourage people to buy from them.
"Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy, play a hugely important role in our communities and add to the unique character of each locality.
"Establishing a Small Business Saturday in the UK, a concept which has enjoyed considerable success in the US, would provide a small but simple and effective way to celebrate local small businesses and encourage more people to buy from them on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. "A Small Business Saturday in the UK is something all local authorities, whatever their political persuasion, could support and promote."
