What do you think about closing Richmond Park to motorists on a Sunday? A petition has been started to try make this happen.

It's hoped the lack of vehicles will improve access to cyclists, based on the grounds that the coverage surrounding the Olympics has boosted an enthusiasm in sport.

The application also argues that by closing the park to motorists would keep the 'Olympic Legacy' alive for cyclists.

The application points out that the lack of cars in the Royal Park will promote conservation in the area.

the best approach would be to close one lane, permanently. One for the motorists and one for the cyclist in the opposite direction.
There is a lot of unnecessary traffic in Richmond, people just "tour" around and leave the park or they use it as a shortcut. There are long queues of cars on weekends trying to get into small car parks, the stupidity of motorists it beyond belief as they wait and wait hoping to get in, causing major jams, noise, pollution.
PEOPLE WITH BIKES ARE MOSTLY MOTORISTS TOO, STOP THAT "THEY DON'T PAY ROAD TAXES".
People, Richmond is probably the last decent green oasis in London, why oh why do you want traffic to go through it??? You have to the whole of London to whiz z around and show off your little motor, why do insist on wanting to drive through the last bit of nature??
Hopefully, they 'll start charging you all. And yes, I am a motorist too.

streatham1 if you are going to oppose this petition please do so by using rational arguments, please save the "they don't pay road tax" and "don't use cycle lane" nonsense for the Daily Mail website.

As a cyclists I also do not support this petition for a number of reasons. Closing the roads would make getting to the park difficult for a large number of regular visitors. Suggestions that you could allow cars only into car parks near gates would be impractical and difficult to enforce. It would also have an adverse effect on trade for the businesses in the Park, Pembrooke Lodge, other cafe's, the golf courses and even the cycle hire by Roehampton gate.

I don't drive to Richmond Park at the weekends as finding a parking space, especially on sunny days can be horrendous, but this does show how many people do drive to use the park. Instead I choose to cycle there with my family in tow, but not everyone is lucky enough to be able to cycle to the park.

Like the 17 year old lad that created the e-petition I can sometimes be found using the Richmond Park road circuit on my bike for exercise. However, I prefer to head out to the North Downs and Surrey lanes where the roads are far less clogged up by cars.

Unlike the 17 year old lad inspired by the London Olympics, I long ago lost my youthful exuberance. So we should cut him some slack as I'm sure he created the e-petition with all best intentions in mind, if not a fully thought out idea.

I am in full agreement with you marc i am totally amazed that people who dont pay any road tax should think they have a right to tell us the motorist who pay enough road tax which by the way quiet alot of is being spent on those annoying blue cycle lanes that some cycalist dont even use what is this country coming to when they think they can close a rd in the park to traffic on a Sunday its open to everyone if they dont like it find away around it

No I don't think they should close Richmond Park to traffic on a Sunday. That's the day I would most likely go into the park. Either for a picnic or Sunday lunch in Pembroke lodge. I want to be able to park for free, not park outside and be ripped off with Richmond parking charges and evading the over zealous traffic wardens.
